Goodreads review by Maryam

I think this book was intended to be humorous, but I didn't find it quite funny. On a positive note, I found it refreshing to see a retelling of Hansel and Gretel with the characters all grown up. However, my expectations were slightly higher. As for the Gretel mysteries, I'm still on the fence. The......more

Gretel (yes, that Gretel) is all grown up and is now a detective. She is contacted by messenger to find some stolen art. When the messenger dies in her living room, she heads out of town to work the case and escape the prying eyes of the local police. I wanted to really like this book. I usually enjo......more

4.5 stars. This was such an odd, silly, fairy tale-inspired cozy mystery. And I have to admit that I had my doubts early on. Gretel (of Hansel and Gretel) is now an adult and an acclaimed private investigator. What was off-putting at first for me was that Gretel does not come across as put together......more

I really enjoyed this fairy tale retelling of Hansel and Gretel. It was a bit different from the original story. Gretel was aided by mice during the story, so it kind of reminded me of Cinderella too. I'll probably read to more Brothers Grimm Mystery books.......more

Quotes

“Bestseller Brackston melds folktale whimsy with a sardonic adult voice in the rollicking first of a new series set in 1776 Bavaria. Gretel, now grown up and living with witless older brother Hans in provincial Gesternstadt, funds her love of fine things by working as a private detective…Along the way, talking mice and hobgoblins share clues, the world’s largest sausage explodes, and famous fairy-tale characters make amusing cameo appearances.” Publishers Weekly

“Brackston’s deft mystery (and series launch) set in eighteenth-century Germany dances a fine line between spoof and satire, with a hearty mix of fairy-tale lore thrown in. Larger-than-life characters are balanced with a smart plot that is sure to appeal to fans of Jasper Fforde’s Nursery Crime series.” Library Journal

“In crisp upper-crust tones, Kate Reading narrates this charming mystery, set in a land filled with Grimm’s characters…Talking mice, hobgoblins, princesses, officers, and military men are just a few of the amazing characters listeners meet, all expertly performed by Reading. Every character—from Hans to Wolfie, from Ferdinand von Ferdinand to Police Inspector Strudel and Gottfried the mouse—has its own accent and tones, depending upon his or her personality. Reading shifts personas flawlessly while Gretel follows clues small and large, just a few steps ahead of the law. This cleverly crafted mystery is full of wry humor, which Reading reads without a snicker.” AudioFile
