Synopsis

Our future is in jeopardy and our gifted children are our best hope for solving the myriad problems humanity faces. Within the gifted world is a large population of children whose giftedness remains unrecognized and undeveloped because they are also diagnosed with one or more developmental or learning disorders. These children are known as Twice Exceptional (or 2e)individuals who are gifted and also have a physical or mental impairment.  In some cases, a childs disability masks his giftedness, causing educators and other adults in the childs life to focus on his weaknesses rather than developing his talents.  In other cases, a childs giftedness can mask her disability, meaning she wont receive the special education services that could help her manage and possibly overcome her disability.  This misperception impacts 2e children because they remain trapped in a never-ending cycle of chasing a diagnosis to explain their weaknesses instead of having the world recognize and cultivate the tremendous gifts they have to offer.  Today's 2e kids are our next Albert Einsteins, Isaac Newtons, and Bill Gatesesand we need to find them and nurture their enormous talents.  Bright Not Broken shows readers how to  identify a twice-exceptional child  understand these misunderstood kidsand comprehend why it can be such a labyrinth to get a correct diagnosis  support 2e kids success at school and at home

About Temple Grandin

Ten years ago, Oliver Sacks wrote a profile for The New Yorker about an extraordinary woman whose triumph over her developmental disorder was profound but who still felt completely alienated from human emotion and interaction. With people, she said, she is a self proclaimed "anthropologist on Mars," a phrase Sacks adopted for the title of his bestselling collection. Among animals, however, she is completely at home.

Besides being autistic, Temple Grandin earned her Ph.D. in animal science from the University of Illinois; went on to become an associate professor at Colorado State University; and wrote two books on autism, including the seminal Thinking in Pictures. When Dustin Hoffman went to research his role in Rain Man, Temple was the person he contacted.

One of the most celebrated and effective animal advocates on the planet, Grandin revolutionized animal movement systems and spearheaded reform of the quality of life and humaneness of death for the cows, pigs, and chickens that Americans eat. Through Grandin Livestock Systems, she works with the country's fast food purveyors-McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Wendys, and Burger Kingm to monitor the conditions of animal facilities worldwide.

Temple Grandin is a towering figure for our times. She has devoted the last 30 years to studying animals and making their lives better, has been profiled everywhere everywhere from 48 Hours to The New York Times, is a sought-after speaker on autism and animal rights, and is considered one of the world's leading academic theoreticians in her field.

Temple Grandin has redefined society's perception of what is possible for autistics.

This book should have been subtitled - Understanding the labels. A good portion of the book is about the current DSM system used in diagnosing the individual or child. Also covered in depth is the educational systems lack of understanding on how to work with the "labeled" child. Sections on IDEA 200......more

An interesting discussion about twice-exceptional ("2e") children, particularly gifted kids with an autism-spectrum disorder and/or ADHD. Much of the book is focused on discrediting the DSM system, which is of course imperfect, but these authors were extreme. Not sure how qualified they were to do s......more

I agree that too many kids these days are medicated. Einstein, Van Gogh, and other brilliant people would be labeled and medicated in this society. They are bright not broken. We need to nurture and create an environment in which they can flourish.......more

Borrowed this from a friend and just bought my own copy so that my husband and family members can read it, with a view to understanding the struggles that 2e children face in traditional schools. I will also share with any school administrators or teachers who are open to learning about 2e children......more
