Synopsis

From a renowned scholar and translator, the definitive translation of Aesop's Fables

Aesop's fables are among the most familiar and best-loved stories in the world. Tales like "The Tortoise and the Hare," "The Dog in the Manger," and "Sour Grapes" have captivated us for generations. The fables delight us and teach timeless truths. Aesop's tales offer us a world fundamentally simpler to ours—one with clear good and plain evil—but nonetheless one that is marked by political nuance and literary complexity.

Newly translated and annotated by renowned scholar Robin Waterfield, this definitive translation shines a new light on four hundred of Aesop's most enduring fables.

About Aesop

Aesop (620-560 BC) was a slave in ancient Greece who is known only for the genre of fables that are ascribed to him. The various collections that go under the rubric "Aesop's Fables" are still taught as moral lessons and used as subjects for various entertainments, especially children's plays and cartoons.

I had a copy myself when I was a kid, and it was one of my favourite books. I can't guess how many times I read it. Thinking about it now, it surprises me to realise how fresh......more

AESOP'S ECHOES It is amazing how so many popular references and common senses are found here. Aesop finds his echoes throughout the high flying philosophers and through the earthy grandmothers, not only engrafted into the literature of the civilized world, but familiar as household words in daily......more
