Synopsis

At twenty-five, life's innumerable entanglements are getting to Arshi. Her blonde American step-mom's trying too hard (she's taken to welcoming guests with a traditional aarti). The gorgeous guy who has Arshi all flushed and dreamy doesn't seem to be trying at all (he's the Ice Prince who thaws at his own convenience). Her best friend Deeksha's going to be married in a few months (Arshi's still in the process of finding the correct labels for the men in her life). And, her otherwise unruffled, cocktail-concocting flatmate Topsy's getting testier by the day because her conservative family will never approve of the darling guy she's in love with. What's more, there's a cheating ex-boyfriend, a weepy neighbour and a heinous boss who need to be told where to get off. Her head spinning wildly with the sheer gravity of her life's quandaries, Arshi realizes what she needs most now (besides a barrelful of alcohol and some serious post coital cuddling) are just a few epiphanies of the right kind. When it first came out in 2008, You Are Here was a game changer: unexpectedly candid, surprisingly wise, audaciously explicit. Now, ten years and five books later, it has never been out of print, and this anniversary edition is a reminder of how much, and how little, has changed in the life of a single woman in India.

About The Author

Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan was born in Hyderabad, but grew up in New Delhi, where she currently lives with her partner and their three cats. Formerly a journalist, Madhavan's first book You Are Here was commissioned in 2007 on the basis of her hugely popular blog Compulsive Confessions, and was the first book to speak of the concerns of a certain type of modern Indian woman. Since then, Madhavan has written four more novels-two for young adults-and a collection of short stories, as well as contributing to several anthologies. She also writes essays and columns for a variety of publications.

I always really enjoy when the current US Poet Laureate gets to use their post to put out a poetry anthology of their choosing. Our current Laureate, Ada Limón, is an absolutely brilliant poet and I’ve loved that her initiative has been the You Are Here project, which includes Poetry In the Parks to......more

I love the spirit of the project behind You Are Here--especially Ada Limón's encouragement to readers to get outside and write our own You Are Here poems. Unfortunately, I felt like Limón's introduction was among the best parts of the collection. I only connected with a handful of the poems included......more

A book of poetry that's both devastating and uplifting, about the connection between poetry, humanity and nature.......more

A poetry collection is a great excuse to experiment with reading: read aloud, mouth words, make sounds to yourself. I decided to download the audiobook and listen, and when that wasn’t quite enough, I listened while reading along with my eyes. I listened before falling asleep, letting my subconsciou......more

Com passa en totes les antologies, alguns poemes agraden més que altres. Però, com a col·lecció, m'ha agradat i té sentit i m'ha fet conèixer poetes de qui no havia llegit res mai i que m'han semblat interessants.......more
