Synopsis

An unforgettable tale of a woman at her most vulnerable by Agatha Christie, written under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott.Agatha Christie, famous for her ingenious crime novels, also wrote about crimes of the heart. Written under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, Christie’s tales of romantic suspense further explore the human psychology she was so intrigued by, freed from the expectations of her mystery fans.  Bereft of the three people she has held most dear—her mother, her husband and her daughter—Celia is on the verge of suicide. Then one night on an exotic island, she meets Larraby, a successful portrait painter. Through a long night of talk, she reveals she is afraid to commit herself to a second chance at happiness with another person, yet is not brave enough to face life alone. Can Larraby help Celia come to terms with the past, or will they part ways, her outcome still uncertain? Unfinished Portrait is both poignant and personal, borrowing details from the author’s own life to create an unforgettable and bittersweet love story.

About Agatha Christie

What a daunting task to write about the most famous mystery writer, Agatha Christie. She was born in 1890 in England, where she was home schooled by her American father. It was an unusual way to be educated for the times. Her father did not want her to begin learning to read until age eight, but out of boredom, she taught herself to read by age five.

In his research, Curran found a plethora of information about Agatha. He outlines many of those interesting facts. Since there are so many, just a few will be mentioned here. Agatha could have been an excellent performer as a pianist, but she was much too shy to perform. She once had three plays running simultaneously in London. She traveled around the world in 1922, which would have been quite a feat back then. Agatha loved dogs. She has a rose named after her. She never did drink alcohol nor smoked. Her last public appearance was in 1974, at the premier of the movie, Murder on the Orient Express. Agatha Christie's name has appeared every day for 53 years in every newspaper with a West End London theatre listing. Her favorite flower was Lily of the Valley. The information about this illustrious author goes on and on. It is a great asset to readers that author John Curran wrote the definitive book about an iconic author. One other interesting fact was that Agatha met Archie Christie in 1912, married on Christmas Eve 1914, spending their honeymoon at The Grand Hotel in Torquay, but Archie returned to France on Dec 27th due to the War. Agatha and Archie fid not really experience married life until he was posted at the London War Office. Agatha has been quoted as saying only then did she feel that her married life truly began.

I don't think I'll be rushing to read another Mary Westmacott any time soon. Unfinished Portrait is based very obviously on Agatha Christie's real life - her father's early death leaving her mother struggling for cash, her bad first marriage, her own difficulties in finding a place for herself in the......more

The second romantic novel Christie wrote under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. It gives a very vivid description of the life and times of Agatha Christie, the then prevalent customs and society’s view towards women in particular. It is a story of Celia though Christie’s husband Max Mallowan says in t......more

This was such a difficult story to read because I knew it was based on Agatha Christie herself, her own life and feelings. And how Archie Christie truly hurt her so deeply in the end, at the worst time he could possible do it. Also how he just seemed to be blind to anything but his own thoughts and......more
