Synopsis

Based on an actual murder case Susan Glaspell reported for the Des Moines News in 1916, this one-act play represented an early exploration of gender relationships in a time when women often were considered to be mere “trifles.” The play is considered a groundbreaking work in feminist literature and is often included in American drama anthologies. Susan Glaspell (1876–1948) was a Pulitzer Prize–winning
playwright, novelist, biographer, poet, actress, and director. Her works
include Trifles, A Jury of Her Peers, and Fidelity.
Her work was strongly influenced by a murder trial Glaspell covered for a newspaper, in
which a woman was convicted of murdering her husband.

THIS IS EXCELLENT. EXTRAORDINARY. As delicate as poignant, Susan Glaspell constructs a -feminist- detective story as an excuse to discuss a much bigger issue, gender violence (as suffered by our choir singer) and its grandfather sexism (evidenced in the way the males behave towards the two ladies).......more
