Synopsis

Frankly, a killer doesn't give a damn about offing Clark Gable—or Toby Peters—in this "fast-paced and colorful addition to a very successful series" (Publishers Weekly).

On December 10, 1938, Atlanta burned again. In the back lot at David O. Selznick's studio, sets from a dozen old pictures were pushed together and set ablaze to provide a backdrop for the climax of what Selznick promised to be the movie of the century: Gone with the Wind. Toby Peters, then just a studio security guard, was on hand to help keep the Confederate extras in line. When the fire was over, he found one of them dead, impaled on his own sword.

Five years later, Peters scratches out a living as a private detective for Hollywood's best known stars. Now it's Clark Gable who needs his help. He's been getting death threats. On the back of a cryptic poem, the sleuth finds a list of people on scene the night the extra died. Two are already dead, and the rest are next. Sure enough, one of those marked for death is Gable. The other is Toby Peters . . .

About Stuart M. Kaminsky

Stuart M. Kaminsky (1934-2009) was one of the most prolific crime fiction authors of the last four decades. Born in Chicago, he spent his youth immersed in pulp fiction and classic cinema-two forms of popular entertainment which he would make his life's work. After college and a stint in the army, Kaminsky wrote film criticism and biographies of the great actors and directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. In 1977, when a planned biography of Charlton Heston fell through, Kaminsky wrote Bullet for a Star, his first Toby Peters novel, beginning a fiction career that would last the rest of his life.

Kaminsky penned twenty-four novels starring the detective, whom he described as "the anti-Philip Marlowe." In 1981's Death of a Dissident, Kaminsky debuted Moscow police detective Porfiry Rostnikov, whose stories were praised for their accurate depiction of Soviet life. His other two series starred Abe Lieberman, a hardened Chicago cop, and Lew Fonseca, a process server. In all, Kaminsky wrote more than sixty novels. He died in St. Louis in 2009.

The next re-read in the series. A serial killer is after extras who witnessed a murder during the filming of Gone With the Wind, as well as Clark Gable. And, since Toby Peters was there as security, he's on the list, too. A serial killer who leaves bad poems and confusing motives. Lots of fun, chases......more

"Tomorrow is another day" is another Toby Peters Mystery. Toby is a private eye in 1940's Hollywood who always is low on cash but is hired by top movie or literary figures to solve problems for them. In this novel, Clark Gable hires Toby to discover who sent him a poem saying people involved in "Gon......more

I'm not a big fan of novels that make actual people character's in their plot. My opinion hasn't changed, but it is obvious that the author cares about the subject matter he's writing about. The mystery is decent, and people who do love this style of genre will probably enjoy it a lot more than I di......more

I didn’t connect with the Gary Cooper book in this series, as I didn’t know much of Cooper. To be honest I didn’t think I had a great grasp on Clark Gable either (I have seen GONE WITH THE WIND, but then I have also seen HIGH NOON), however I liked this one a lot. Maybe it’s because the plot is so s......more
