Synopsis

Humor and overall literary style have changed a lot in the 132 years since this book was published in 1889. However, the information remains informative, primarily because there is a certain amount of truthfulness about it that manages to disregard the passage of time. It takes in some unusual events that either did happen, or could have. It involves three men and a dog that is sometimes smarter than any of them. Between them, they come up with some depth of thought and at least a minor ability to understand human nature. No real claim is made that the story teaches any particular lessons, good, bad, or indifferent, and veracity occasionally strays in unexpected directions. Of course, that’s to be expected when you realize the foursome, which naturally includes the dog, have no more, maybe less, poetic values than the rest of us. How you might have reacted in some of their occasional zany escapades is up to you to decide. In any case, we invite you to hear about what at least part of England was like almost a century and a half ago.

About Jerome K. Jerome

Jerome K. Jerome (1859–1927), English humorist, novelist, and playwright, was born in Staffordshire and brought up in London. After a series of jobs including clerk, schoolmaster, actor, and journalist, he became joint editor of the Idler in 1892 and launched his own twopenny weekly, To-Day. His magnificently ridiculous Three Men in a Boat (1889) established itself as a humorous classic of the whimsical. His other books include Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886); Three Men on the Bummel (1900); Paul Kelver (1902); the morality play The Passing of the Third Floor Back (1907); and his autobiography, My Life and Times (1926).

About John Rayburn

There is nothing useful this book. Nothing edifying, nothing instructive, or clarifying in this novel. I read Three Men in a Boat last month and didn't learn anything at all! And this month I pick up Three Men on the Bummel and expected *AT LEAST* a concise travelogue with pretty pictures describing......more

Since this book was an influence on Connie Willis' fabulous and funny novel ([URL not allowed]), I figured I should read it and see what she was getting at. It's a short, comic Victorian novel. The humor is based on the fact that none of the events of the book are of any import......more

Three Men in a Boat - 4 stars I loved this. It was brilliantly written and had me laughing throughout. This was supposed to be a travel document but it turned out to be a laugh-riot. Three Men on the Bummel - 3 stars In the second book, our characters embark on a bicycle trip to Germany. I really loved......more

Quotes

“The book was meant to be a serious travel guide…but Jerome’s rambling anecdotes and humorous take on travelers J., Harris, and George—and J.’s feckless fox terrier, Montmorency—turned it into something far rarer: an honest account of male friendship.” The Guardian (London)

“Wonderfully fresh and funny…Jerome’s writing triumphantly stands the test of time.” Daily Telegraph (London)
