Synopsis

Step into Isaac Asimov’s early foray into science fiction comedy with The Magnificent Possession. First published in 1940, this witty short story follows Walter Sills, a struggling chemist whose “brilliant” discovery—plating metals with ammonium to mimic gold—spirals into chaos. Gangsters, corrupt politicians, and desperate industrialists descend on him, only for the invention’s fatal flaw to emerge: a stench so foul it ruins everything. Part satire, part cautionary tale, this story reveals Asimov’s youthful experimentation with humor and the pitfalls of unchecked ambition.

About Isaac Asimov

Isaac Asimov began writing his Foundation series at the age of twenty-one, not realizing that it would one day be considered a cornerstone of science fiction. During his legendary career, Asimov penned over 470 books on subjects ranging from science to Shakespeare to history, though he was most loved for his award-winning science fiction sagas, which include the Robot, Empire, and Foundation series. Named "Grand Master of Science Fiction" by the Science Fiction Writers of America, Asimov entertained and educated readers of all ages for close to five decades. He died, at the age of seventy-two, in April 1992.
