“Readers will adore this droll romp. Sure to provoke heavy and sustained laughter.” Booklist (starred review)
“Clever wordplay, engaging characters, and the kind of sober undercurrent that makes true comedy more buoyant, make this a fine addition to the short list of stories that truly entertain.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“This is a lark of an adventure story…Levoy provides a merry and suspenseful chase.” Publishers Weekly
“A good read.” School Library Journal
“[A] fast and funny book that students will enjoy hearing read aloud. The story’s 1890s setting also makes an excellent jumping-off point for history lessons about turn-of-the-century America.” Children’s Literature
“Narrator Kirby Heyborne draws listeners into the plight of Amy and Joshua…When the children escape and team up with an itinerant magician…Heyborne hits his stride, dynamically rendering the cross-country chase as the trio is pursued by outlaws as well as the persistent Aunt Vootch. Heyborne gives Mortimer’s voice an easygoing tone with a lovely singsong effect when he reacts to the shenanigans of his hat…[A] funny, merry adventure.” AudioFile
