Synopsis

By the time the First World War ended in 1918, eight million people had died in what had been perhaps the most apocalyptic episode the world had known.

This Very Short Introduction provides a concise and insightful history of the Great War—from the state of Europe in 1914, to the role of the US, the collapse of Russia, and the eventual surrender of the Central Powers. Examining how and why the war was fought, as well as the historical controversies that still surround the war, Michael Howard also looks at how peace was ultimately made, and describes the potent legacy of resentment left to Germany.

He cofounded the International Institute for Strategic Studies in 1958. The author of many highly regarded books, Howard was described in the Financial Times as "Britain's greatest living historian," and by the Guardian as "Britain's foremost expert on conflict."

Una muy buena introducción al tema, que da un barniz general sobre los orígenes, el desarrollo y las consecuencias de la Primera Guerra Mundial, permitiendo tener una buena visión general en muy poco tiempo. Lógicamente, como contrapartida,......more

The First World War is by far the lesser known of the two major 20th century military conflicts that bear the name of a World War. This is partly due to the fact that it is the earlier of the two wars and thus farther from our collective memories. More importantly, in my opinion, is the fact that it......more

He explains it all as a story, using general terms and moving chronologically, speaking in broad strokes like, “the British thought this.” This helped kept things simple. While I admit there is much nuance left out, I think this book is great for what it tries to do. I admire Howard’s resistance aga......more
