Synopsis

When she first went to sea in April of 1961, the U.S. nuclear submarine Thresher was the most advanced submarine at sea, built specifically to hunt and kill Soviet submarines. In The Death of the USS Thresher, renowned naval and intelligence consultant Norman Polmar recounts the dramatic circumstances surrounding her implosion, which killed all 129 men on board, in history's first loss of a nuclear submarine. This revised edition of Polmar's 1964 classic is based on interviews with the Thresher's first command officer, other submarine officers, and the designers of the submarine. Polmar provides recently declassified information about the submarine, and relates the loss to subsequent U.S. and Soviet nuclear submarine sinkings, as well as to the escape and rescue systems developed by the Navy in the aftermath of the disaster. The Death of the USS Thresher is a must-listen for the legions of fans who enjoyed the late Peter Maas's New York Times bestseller The Terrible Hours.

The Thresher came alive in 1963. It was to be a short life. With a submarine hull built for deeper operation the Navy would get......more

It was a decent account of the loss of the Thresher. I found chapter seven moving. Being in a military family, it was relatable. Overall, it was a decent read. Mostly educating, but somewhat suspenseful. I enjoyed it quite a bit.......more

I was a little disappointed in this book; I expected more, I guess. So often you seldom really learn about the crew. I want to know the men who gave their lives, as well as the technical stuff. I thought there was too much repetition and too much speculation. My Dad lost a buddy on the Thresher and......more

First learned about the tragedy of the USS Thresher on the History Channel. Immediately wanted to know more about the 129 souls lost, but learned very little about their personal stories. Would still recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about those who selflessly serve our country and by the......more

The USS Thresher was a nuclear submarine that was designed to seek and destroy Soviet submarines. The submarine had the most sophisticated weapons systems available at the time, as well as highly sensitive sonar that was capable of detecting ships at great distances. The ship was ordered in 1958, an......more
