Synopsis

Fear is the original sin... and Valancy Stirling has been afraid for twenty-nine years.

Trapped in an oppressive, joyless existence in the stifling town of Deerwood, Valancy is the dreaded "old maid" of the prominent but insufferable Stirling clan. She is endlessly belittled by her overbearing mother, patronized by her wealthy relatives, and starved for love and adventure. Her only escape is the secret, imaginary "Blue Castle" of her vivid daydreams. But when a shocking letter arrives from her doctor revealing she has a fatal heart condition and only one year to live, the terrifying specter of death becomes a catalyst for spectacular rebellion. With nothing left to lose, Valancy casts off her shackles. She abandons the family's smothering respectability, begins saying exactly what she thinks, and seeks out the wild beauty of the Muskoka woods—and the dangerous, enigmatic town outcast, Barney Snaith.
