Synopsis

Rome, 58 AD. The dinner party didn’t turn out the way Aemilius Valerius expected. He didn’t expect a place at the main table. He didn’t expect to drink that much. He didn’t expect to hook up with one of the scarier dancers. And he most certainly didn’t expect to trip over the bloody corpse of his host on the floor of the informal dining room. One man’s grisly murder is another man’s opportunity. Valerius teams up with the investigator, a plebeian with a chip on his shoulder, to discover the killer. Mad Uncle Maro promised it would be a smart career move, but that was before a second senator turned up dead. Now everything points towards a corrupt legion, an imperial assassin, and the emperor’s mother. It might have been smarter to accept that honorary priesthood, stupid hat or not.

About Jennifer Burke

Jennifer Burke lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia, with three cats, two dogs, and more geckos than she wants. She spends half her time as a government minion and half her time writing. Guess which one she prefers? She studied History and English at university, but neither of them very thoroughly, so she takes full blame for any mistakes you find in her books. Under the pen name Lisa Henry, Jennifer writes m/m romance and has previously been nominated for a Lambda Literary Award.

'Tis the season for cold woods to get lost in, for sad memories to get lost in, for watery graves and tragic houses, for secrets to be unveiled. 'Tis the season for dreams to come true, alas. Where is the "masterpiece" button because 5 stars are not enough. Robert Aickman is criminally neglected. A superb writer, one of a kind really. Reading Sub Rosa was a unique reading experience. I have felt the same way when I first read the work of Gene Wolfe (Wolfe also blurbed Aickman's novel "th......more

It tells of a strange episode in Belgium, where the artist is visiting the elderly widow of one of his favorite artists. The story seems to thrive o......more
