This is an excellent mystery. H-E's characters are well-drawn and often lovable and Bill Slider is emerging, in No 17 of the series, as a bit of a superman (lower case initial) crossed with a Lone Ranger on a quest for justice. As soon as you begin reading this novel it is obvious there have been previous books. Regardless of that, this novel can definitely be read as a stand-alone book.
