Synopsis

The Dambusters were the go-to forces for dangerous precision attacks: They bombed Hitler's prize battleship, Tirpitz, as well as rocket sites, weapon strongholds, and the dams at the heart of the industrial Ruhr; they targeted enemy leaders including Hitler and Mussolini; and they created a false fleet on D-Day, which fooled the Germans. But they also suffered brutal losses, with 75 percent of 617 Squadron killed in action by the end of the war.

In this awe-inspiring book, John Nichol, himself a former RAF flight lieutenant, retraces the path of 617 Squadron's most dangerous sorties, the ones largely lost to history. Including personal stories of the surviving Dambusters, Return of the Dambusters is a tense, poignant story of courage by men who braved death in the name of freedom.

About John Nichol

John Nichol is coauthor, with John Peters, of the bestselling Tornado Down, and, with Tony Rennell, of The Last Escape and Tail-End Charlies. As a former RAF flight lieutenant in the first Gulf War, he was held as a prisoner of war when his bomber was shot down on a mission over Iraq. He is also a journalist and widely quoted military commentator.

The Dambusters raid was just the beginning I thoroughly enjoyed reading this history of an RAF heavy bomber squadron that did the most intense personally sacrificial but successful attacks on German/Italian targets. You get a clear picture of the men, the aeroplanes and their weapons. The author goes......more

This is the first WWII book I have read that was written totally about a RAF squadron. The focus is on the elite 617. As I read the title to my husband, he knew what this squadron did even before I started the book. There is more material available that I will probably look for. The writing style is......more
