Ralph Compton stood six-foot-eight without his boots. His first novel in the Trail Drive series, The Goodnight Trail, was a finalist for the Western Writers of America Medicine Pipe Bearer Award for best debut novel. He was also the author of the Sundown Rider series and the Border Empire series. A native of St. Clair County, Alabama, Compton worked as a musician, a radio announcer, a songwriter, and a newspaper columnist before turning to writing westerns. He died in Nashville, Tennessee in 1998.
Being judgemental of the title, it took me a bit to finally pick this book up and read it. Happy I found this page turner, I found that I could hardly put it down. I enjoy a well written historical fiction. Being a Texas girl myself, I'm drawn to stories of the old west and cowboys.......more
pretty good Good story. A feel good story in more ways than one. enough action. I think it is Worth the read......more
Best western story I have read in a while. Lots of twist and turns, suspense and a great ending.......more
Enjoyable. Choked full of stereotypes ( a prostitute with heart of gold, a drunkard on his way to redemption). Wished had more interactions with some characters like Yearly and Pickles, but wanting more of those characters shows how much I enjoyed them.......more
Enjoyable read......more
