Ralph Compton stood six-foot-eight without his boots. His first novel in the Trail Drive series, The Goodnight Trail, was a finalist for the Western Writers of America Medicine Pipe Bearer Award for best debut novel. He was also the author of the Sundown Rider series and the Border Empire series. A native of St. Clair County, Alabama, Compton worked as a musician, a radio announcer, a songwriter, and a newspaper columnist before turning to writing westerns. He died in Nashville, Tennessee in 1998.
Guns of the canyonlands is a western. If you like westerns you will like this book. I gave this book three stars because like I have said in other reviews I hate it when there is too much good luck in a book. If a character should die five to six times in the book but miraculously escapes every time......more

One of the best books I’ve read so far! Chance Tyree is a prime example of a true western badass! When I get out of the military I’m going to go back to writing scrips and make this book a movie, it’s that good.......more
