An unusual call from Chinese merchant Ling Tang began an ongoing set of circumstances for young Biff Brewster. He was planning a trip to Rangoon in Burma to visit his Uncle Charlie. The uncle had bounced around the world quite a bit. He had flown in a fighter plane during the Korean conflict and had traveled as much as he could about the Orient on his furlough time. After the military stretch he formed a fleet of planes for Explorations Unlimited with an old pilot friend. Their company had headquarters at Unhao on the Irriwaddy River, northeast of Rangoon near the Chinese border.It seemed such a trip for Biff would be a good way to spend the remainder of his summer vacation from school. It was a pleasant thought for beginning something very different to look forward to. However, “different” isn’t a strong enough description of what was going to happen.With departure time coming up, Biff got a rude awakening one morning … one that led up to his being given a mysterious ring with the inscription, “Fortune shines upon, and the gods protect, the wearer of this ring,” What was meant?
