3.5 mysterious stars to Mysterium! ⛰ ⛰ ⛰.5 The cover of Mysterium drew me in instantly. It reminded me of Denali/Mount McKinley in Alaska, which is glorious, and I have been fortunate enough to see in person; however Mysterium is actually India’s highest peak, Mount Sarasvati, located in the Himalaya......more
Mysterium is a fictional mountain in the Himalayas. A team of climbers and Sherpas attempt to climb it with unexpected outcomes. The novel lacked a tone of adventure and has more of a dream like quality to the narrative. I prefer a non fictional account of climbing. Copy provided by the Publisher and......more
Wanted to love it, the cover speaks to me, but abandoned at fifty percent, just didn’t hold my attention. Did enjoy googling about the real account this was based on, think I prefer nonfiction, it’s too exhilarating to be fiction.........more
Though fiction, this book was perhaps the most thoughtful, quiet, philosophical book about mountain climbing I've encountered. I don't mountain climb, personally, but the process horrifies and fascinates me, like caving or cave diving, and I'm drawn to stories of ascents and descents, tragedy and su......more
Mysterium takes on a fascinating subject, the compulsion of climbers, and the allure of high altitudes. I particularly enjoyed the author’s description of the group dynamics. Her descriptions of Delhi and the climb to altitude were spot on, and made me feel like I was back in Nepal. Much of that des......more
“First, there is the superbly drawn cast of complex and compelling characters, none more beguiling than Sarasvati ‘Sara’ Troy, the young woman who, with a vision of climbing the mountain that is her namesake, puts the plot in motion. Then, there is the masterfully executed suspense and drama of the climb. Finally, there is the lovely and lyric writing about the mountain herself—as monolith and metaphor. These three pleasures combine to make Mysterium impossible to put down.” Pam Houston, #1 Los Angeles Times bestselling author
“An adventure at the top of the world; a narrative of reflection, insight, and survival.” Paulette Jiles, author of News of the World
“Froderberg has a firm grasp on the technical aspects of climbing, as well as its many dangers…Offers the unusual combination of an intellectual challenge coupled with a brutal but ecstatic story.” Publishers Weekly
“Mysterium is a probing, ultimately breathtaking novel. Susan Froderberg’s unforgettable protagonist, Sara Troy, understands that we only truly live when at last we discover something worth dying for.” John Kaag, author of Hiking with Nietzsche: On Becoming Who You Are
