Synopsis

Lauren Weedman is not okay.

She's living what should be the good life in sunny Los Angeles. After a gig as a correspondent with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, she scored parts in blockbuster movies, which led to memorable recurring roles on HBO's Hung and Looking. She had a loving husband and an adorable baby boy.

In these comedic essays, she turns a piercingly observant, darkly funny lens on the ways her life is actually not okay. She tells the story of her husband's affair with their babysitter, her first and only threesome, a tattoo gone horribly awry, and how the birth of her son caused mama drama with her own mother and birth mother with laugh-out-loud wit and a powerful undercurrent of vulnerability that pulls off a stunning balance between comedy and tragedy.

Miss Fortune is not a book that is " a ha ha laugh a minute" kind of book. It is instead, the chronicling of a life and all the moments and incidents that have gone into making that life unique. For me, Miss Fortune is like that friend who's loud and fun and real but she also takes a lot of energy out of you when you meet up for drinks. The short stories are fun and well told, they're filled with self-deprecating humor and with some of the sadness of real life, which, when sandwiched in bet......more

I couldn't get past the first 25 pages. This story was going everywhere and going nowhere at the same time. No real plot or progression from one event to another. Does he love me, too? Jump to weird friend .Is he cheating? Jump to dead wife. We are breaking up. Jump to step-son relationship. Hey, I......more

Read if you want to see someone non-queer (as far as we know in the book and from Google) use the f slur multiple times, hear the author describe each minor person in her life by their race when it isn’t important, and call people “exotic” and “Asperger-y.” I can a......more
