Synopsis

In the night, all rules are forgotten …Eloisa James, the acclaimed author of Potent Pleasures, returns to Regency England with an unforgettable new heroine—a genteel but naughty innocent who gets more than she bargains for when she finally says yes to love.To her legions of adoring suitors, it comes as quite a shock when Lady Sophie York rejects an offer of marriage from the dashing, rakish Patrick Foakes in favor of amiable but dull Braddon Chatwin. He may be an earl, but it is Patrick's stolen kisses that sear her lips. When Patrick, in disguise, scales a ladder to retrieve his friend's fianc├®e, he never expects the elopement to be his own. Neither does Sophie, Braddon, or the rest of the tattling ton. One hasty wedding later, the passionate innocent and the sophisticated rogue play out their own intricate dance as Sophie masters what it takes to keep a man where he belongs. And Patrick learns the ultimate lesson in love.

About Eloisa James

To say, it runs in the family, is an understatement when referring to the writing career of author, Mary Bly. Her credentials are impeccable with degrees from various prestigious schools, such as Harvard, Oxford, and Yale. She is a tenured professor on William Shakespeare, and has published with the Oxford University Press.

While attending the University of Virginia on a humanities fellowship, Bly began writing romance novels. Granted, the novels are not modern day romance, but set in England's Regency Period, where her incomparable knowledge of William Shakespeare serves as an added bonus in her works. She began this genre of writing to expedite paying off her student loans. Her first attempt was very well received.......The Pleasure Trilogy......and sold many copies in hardback, and her advance payment from the book paid off that student loan debt. After that, she decided to publish under the pseudonym of Eloisa James and to only publish in paperback format. It was more of a mass-market plan. Both worked in her favor.

Most of Bly's novels are not typical in character for the romance genre. Most have a very beautiful female character and a romantic interest in a handsome male character. Bly deviates from the norm by featuring a plump female character, or a hero who annulled a marriage because of impotence. Women friends or sisters play important roles in a Bly novel, because she places importance on those relationships in her own life. Most of her novels are in trilogy form or groups of four. That format gives her more story line time to develop interesting characters.

It was several years before Bly uncovered her secret second career to her intellectually snooty colleagues. She even disguised her appearance when she addressed each group, readers of her novels, and colleagues. When she realized how popular her novels were with her readers, she revealed her secret by giving each faculty colleague a copy of her latest novel. It was well received by all. And for the fact that the talent runs in the family, Mary Bly's (Eloisa James) Father, Mother, and Uncle were writers. Her romance novels are very popular all around the world.

It’s been a long time since I’ve really enjoyed a romance and the characters. The downside is this one takes failure to communicate to epic measures, but I just kept putting that aside….again and again. When Sophie first appears my eyes crossed as she’s dressed to scandalize and bent on being provoca......more

This series is a bit of a mess. Or at least the two I’ve read. Nice enough heroines with heroes that just don’t deserve them. Temper tantrums, meanness and lack of communication are not patched over by good hair. Some of the lines Patrick used early on in their relationship put me in mind of a high......more

The author did an outstanding job showing how much this couple loved each other, but they couldn’t figure it out themselves until the very end. It’s extremely frustrating when there are stupid misunderstandings that play out, but it worked. When there is such a huge lack of communication between a c......more

Older Eloisa James comes with more miscommunication and heartbreak than I typically like, but this was still a great read. I’m glad Patrick isn’t the absolute worst like his twin Alex is. The first book in this series is still one of my least favorite books of all time and was annoyed at the comment......more

Quotes

“Sheer reading delight: witty, wise, and passionately romantic.” Mary Balogh, New York Times bestselling author

“A steamy, satisfying romantic romp…Romance writing does not get much better than this.” People

“Shifting from London to the Middle East, Midnight Pleasures is an enthralling read from a vibrant new talent. Ms. James delivers a sensual, exciting, fresh romance that is pure reading pleasure.” RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)

“Ms. James has given us a brilliant plot and marvelous characters.” Rendezvous

“James proves herself a notable chronicler of the genre here. Her spritely tale takes on substance with a subplot about events in the Ottoman Empire. In addition, while the customary hallmarks are in evidence—the breathless, drawn-out sex scenes, the misunderstandings that almost ruin everything—these contretemps flow naturally from the characterizations and plot and contribute to an engaging story.” Publishers Weekly

“Lady Sophie York is set to elope—but with whom? Sophie…has advanced ideas about love, and worse, an excellent education…The intrepid and intelligent Sophie, of course, saves the day, and Patrick falls in love with her all over again by the end of this lively and vividly written tale. Sensual for a Regency and genuinely fun.” Kirkus Reviews
