Her book “Socialism Is Great!”: A Worker’s Memoir of the New China has been published in eight countries. She earned a master’s degree from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a fellowship in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.
Angela Lin, an Earphones Award–winning audiobook narrator, graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a BFA degree in drama. A critically acclaimed actress, her credits include The Good Wife, Law & Order: SVU, and As the World Turns, among others.
“Lin is an excellent choice as narrator because of the many Mandarin names and words peppered throughout the story. The narrator’s proficiency in the language creates a seamless listening experience…Because of the warmth and precision of Lin’s evocative delivery, we sympathize with the difficulties of Lotus’ life of prostitution and agonize over her limited choices. Lin’s lyrical style suits the poetic prose, which lingers in one’s ear even after the audiobook ends.” AudioFile
“A deep dive into China’s spiritual crisis and how people are looking for answers in religion and through acts of kindness and courage in their daily lives.” Ian Johnson, Pulitzer Prize–winning author
“Compelling…The political and economic realities of modern China lend the novel greater depth…We can count ourselves lucky to get this glimpse into the fascinating world of Lotus.” NPR
"[Lotus is] richly humane and…articulates an aspect of China that needs to be represented and upon which official media have been rendered mute.” South China Morning Post
“An engaging read with strong female characters, this novel also provides Western readers a picture of an ‘authentic China’ (Yan Lianke) that is not always seen.” Riveter
“At once immersive and delicate, Zhang’s writing takes Lotus to unexpected places as she searches for—and perhaps finds—what true freedom means.” Booklist
“Zhang returns to the landscape of a rapidly changing China in this debut novel.” Publishers Weekly
“Easy to read and containing fully drawn characters and story lines.” Library Journal
“You will cry and in the end, laugh in celebration not just of the winning characters, but of Zhang’s true gift as an essential novelist of this world.” Da Chen, author of My Last Empress
“Lotus is a rollicking, sexy novel, but it’s not just another fun read. The novel provides so much insight into the underside of China’s roaring economy and the immense pressure on young migrants to get rich quick. In Lijia Zhang’s tour of the sex industry, you’ll find not only sleaze, but soul.” Barbara Demick, National Book Award finalist
