Synopsis

So many leadership and compassion books seek to remind leaders to "behave human" and treat those around them with care. But the truth is that leaders are human. They're not playing at being human or calling forth their humanity on demand. Their struggle in marrying leadership and compassion stems from leaders ignoring self-care—the lack of compassion toward their subordinates is just a symptom.

Human First, Leader Second introduces leaders to the practice of self-compassion through a six-step framework designed to ease even the most hard-headed and hard-assed leaders into thoughtful and productive introspection: Backward: Biography, Biology, Backstory; Forward: Purpose, Values, Priorities; Inward: Intentions, Feelings, Thoughts; Outward: Intent, Actions, Behaviors; Leeward: Self-care and Personal Accountability; Wayward: Regret and Self-forgiveness.

Offering strategies for a personalized exploration of self-compassion—and what works best for the individual—this book will help leaders grow awareness to the importance of self-care while debunking the myth that compassion equals weakness. Regardless of our title or influence, we are all humans first, who need compassion.

Human First, Leader Second: How Self-Compassion Outperforms Self-Criticism is a great read for the "'old school" leader who cares to change, and those "new age" leaders who need a reminder. Let's bring the human back in humankind and also kindness back in humankindness. I recommend this read. Thanks......more

I applaud Backus for sharing his personal story. It wasn’t a pretty picture and his willingness to show how self-criticism had stymied him all of his life is a wake-up call for others. He’s a connector and this makes his message more powerful. I enjoyed the client stories where the people willing to......more

In my experience and estimation, genuine leaders tend to put themselves last, not first. I believe this to be inherent in their DNA. Nothing wrong with that, but if a leader doesn’t take care of him/herself, it could have negative impact on those being led. Massimo Backus has written HUMAN FIRST, LE......more

In this book, Massimo Backus says, "Self-compassionate leadership starts with acknowledging that we're human first." The rest of the book then teaches you what self-compassion is and how you can get more of it. This book is not only helpful for leaders but also for non-leaders who want to learn more......more

An unconventional take on principles of leadership, HFLS is a pragmatic yet compassionate guide to leading people. I thought the breakdown of six common leadership tropes was especially insightful and reminded me of the same type of ability/weakness introspection as working genius. While clearly mak......more
