Synopsis

With lively prose, unforgettable characters, and a touch of mischievous wit, Fern Michaels creates vivid reading experiences in all of her acclaimed USA TODAY and New York Times bestselling novels. Now, she inspires and entertains with a touching tale of the transforming power of love—and a woman whose broken heart finds more room for the simple pleasures of family and home, and for discovering true love in the last place she expected.

Darby Lane and Russell Gunn had been inseparable friends from their early years in the Horseshoe, their wonderful Baton Rouge neighborhood of Southern comforts and childhood fancies, all the way through to graduate school dreams and beyond. Then the unthinkable happens: a tragic accident takes Russ's life, and Darby's world is shattered. Returning to the Horseshoe in utter despair, Darby clings to the only family she's ever known: the three wily and colorful aunts who raised her.

Her long journey to healing takes hold as Darby begins to see Russ's brother Ben through new eyes. Suddenly love blooms in the place of grief, and now, with the help of her aunts, Darby faces the challenge of reuniting Ben with his estranged father—if they can get through the conniving schemes of Ben's social climber stepmother. Calling on the same tender care and patience with which she builds custom dollhouses, Darby begins to create a new life out of her loss—and comes to understand that love truly can conquer anything.

About Fern Michaels

Self-described as someone who can scribble notes and tell great stories, author Fern Michaels, aka Mary Ruth Kuczkir, is a very prolific writer having written 147 books, with 90 being on the New York Times best sellers list. She was born in Pennsylvania, coming into this world as "a dinky little thing", as her father called her. She spent the early part of her adult life becoming a wife and mother of five children. After her children were grown, she separated from her husband, who was a very negative person, and began putting pen to paper to begin her writing career. She had always loved books, and writing one seemed to be the best chance for her to make her own way through the rest of her life. Her first manuscript was not published, but the second attempt was, and so began her illustrious career.

Her successful career allowed her to put all five children through college, on her own, which she claims is one of her most proud accomplishments. She says that when all is considered, family is the most important thing. Fern also bought a beautiful old (300 year old) plantation in South Carolina, where she still lives today. Her grandmother gave her very sage advice many years ago, which she lives by today.......when God is good to you, you have to give back. She developed the Fern Michaels Foundation which grants four scholarships to deserving students. She also opened a pre-school and day care center for single moms who are having a hard time supporting their family.

The quote that best describes is a Dutch saying.......If you can't whistle on your way to work, you don't belong in that job. She follows by saying, "I whistle all day long".

It's rare that I don't finish a book, even when it's not so good. This book sets a ridiculous premise and her books are generally much more engaging. I finally put it down after reading 2/3rds of it. Don't waste your time.

This is not the first Fern Michaels book I ever read - I had already read two others (One Sisterhood book, as well as Pretty Woman) but this was easily the worst of the three, and apparently from the other reviews, I'm not alone in thinking this. Some of the characters were funny, but there were sev......more

Definitely not my favorite by this author. Not enough resolution in the end for me and the bad guy (woman) got away with all the crap she put a family through for decades. Not enough believable reasoning behind several of the things that happened or were kept secret for years. And the person the sto......more

Loved this book. I could actually seeing this made into a movie. The 3 elderly sisters reminded me of the Baldwin sisters in Walton's Mountain plus one more. Their Southern Charm was interesting and the book kept me reading.......more

This book was okay, but hokey. The story is well thought-out enough, and you dont come to care a little for the characters, but there is no suspense, no build up, and very little that compels the reader to keep giong. The main character is reunited with the boy she loved as a child, and within 3 pag......more
