Mrs. Collins' father, Cameron Erskine Thom (June 20, 1825 – February 2, 1915), born in Culpeper County, Virginia, was an attorney and Confederate officer, wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, and, later, a California state senator, Los Angeles County district attorney, city attorney and 16th mayor of Los Angeles between 1882 and 1884.
