Synopsis

Feelings of depersonalization-derealization, or a sense of detachment from one's normal sense of self, are not uncommon. People often describe being outside of themselves, or watching themselves as if in a movie, during "unreal" circumstances such as a car crash or other trauma. This is the mind's normal dissociative reaction at work. This protective system can go awry, however, and can be triggered by ongoing, lower-level stresses, childhood neglect, or certain drugs. Despite its prevalence, depersonalization is often misunderstood and is understudied compared to other conditions.

First published in 2006, this updated edition describes new findings on the origins of DDD, the brain science supporting the diagnosis, and cutting-edge treatment approaches. DDD is examined from medical and psychiatric perspectives, but as the authors reveal, it also emerges in literary, philosophical, and spiritual investigations. Feeling Unreal thoroughly explores these different aspects in a fascinating and essential resource that is accessible to medical professionals and general listeners alike. Physicians, mental health professionals, families, and those who have experienced DDD themselves will find with this book trustworthy and cutting-edge information on DDD, on its history and treatment, and on its place in literature and philosophy as well as in contemporary society.

For whatever reason, Depersonalization Disorder has remained largely unexplored and most people, including some mental health professionals, have never heard of it. This was very useful to me. It doesn't reveal you some magic trick that makes DPD go away, of course, but what it does offer you is a wide range of information about it- really interesting stuff, for me- and that can help you indentify what triggered the disorder, analyse yourself better and learn h......more

I came into this book a bit wary as one of the authors is a psychiatrist and psychiatry has had a pretty awful history in its treatment of the neurodivergent. However, Simeon and Abugel explore depersonalisation across a range of fields, from phenomenology and literature to psychotherapy and neurosc......more

It was a moderately helpful read. It doesn't offer much in the way of an answer, but it does help you feel less alone.......more

This book shows how little is known about depersonalization as the experience/disorder. The author's cover everything from various theories and presentations, to examples in fiction, and treatment approaches. It's all a little thin, and ironically fragmented in it's delivery. It is however, reasonab......more
