M. C. Beaton (1936–2019), hailed as the “Queen of Crime” by the Globe and Mail, was the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Agatha Raisin novels—the basis for the hit series on Acorn TV—as well as the Hamish Macbeth series. Born in Scotland, Beaton also wrote nearly one hundred historical romances under several pseudonyms. Her books have been translated into nineteen languages and sold more than twenty-two million copies worldwide.
Shaun Grindell, actor and Earphones Award–winning narrator, was born and raised in Southampton, England. His training includes the Calland School of Speech and Drama and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in London. He has been seen on stage in London and Las Vegas.
I don't think I could ever love a series as much as I do the Hamish MacBeth books - apart from Agatha Raisin of course whom I love just as much! Both characters are my go to comfort reads. These books ALWAYS cheer me up, calm me down, relax me, ease my mind, no matter which ones I read. I haven't dis......more
OK, maybe I'm overating this book a bit. But I just love the way M.C. Beaton writes. I loved her Agatha Raisin character, and now I've read my first Hamish Macbeth. Samples: 1) There were a lot of strange places in the Highlands of Scotland where the very earth gave out a bleak atmosphere of misery,......more
Reading the Hamish Macbeth series is like putting on your favorite, cozy pajamas and drinking a cup of tea--very enjoyable. Hamish again avoided getting married, kept his police station intact in Loch Dubh, and figured out "who done it" in this charming mystery set in the Scottish Highlands.......more
This one is so sad and it seems it should be in the first 5 of this series so I am very surprised that it is number 10. I want to blame someone and I can't blame Priscilla so I have to blame Hamish. Now I understand better why he has to be a bachelor. This book finally explained quite a few things.......more
Death of a Charming Man isn't one of M.C. Beaton's best entries in the Hamish Macbeth mystery series. From the contrived premise to Hamish's mulishness to his fiancée's coolness and pride, this 10th novel in the series just doesn't come up to the usual standard. Now Hamish Macbeth can be stubborn and......more
“One of the warmest and quirkiest mystery series around…Beaton’s tremendously likable policeman stars here in a tightly wrought tale, with a gem of an ending in which Hamish manages to be both dead right and dead wrong.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Offers is an intimate look at life in a small Scottish village, striking insights into human nature, carefully detailed, highly accurate descriptions of police work, splendid dry humor, and a story that’s as satisfying as a cozy cup of tea.” Booklist
