Synopsis

With the August heat strong enough to melt solid chocolate into syrup, Jake and Ellie crave a break from the bakery ovens, despite tourist season promising a sweet payday. But they never envisioned spending the last weeks of summer drifting around Passamaquoddy Bay searching for pirate’s treasure—and a dead body. Sally Coates believes her husband was murdered off the coast, and begs Ellie, a trusted childhood friend, to locate his remains. It’s unusual that a skilled fisherman would vanish along with the gold doubloon he inherited from his grandfather. And Sally isn’t the only one coveting the valuable heirloom for her own. As Jake and Ellie’s island-hop for answers, they find themselves caught between hungry sharks and hungrier suspects. Can the duo tempt fate and dodge danger before there’s blood in the water—or are they destined to fall into the jaws of a killer’s trap?

This is book 7 in the “Death by Chocolate Mystery Series” and I haven’t read the others but still greatly enjoyed this story. The first I’ve read in this series. This was not a cozy. This was an adventure story on boats that I had no interest in. I have a hard time believing all the five star reviews. The chaotic house and lives they lived also gave me such stress. It wasn’t relaxing at all. I skimmed the last 30 pages.......more

This is a new to me author. I listened to the audiobook which was pretty well done. I've read a lot of cozy mysteries and found this one to be a lot less "cozy" than the ones I typically read. The body count kept going up as the book went along. Maybe this isn't even considered a cozy mystery and I......more

I didn't find myself drawn to any of the characters or the mystery. I didn't know who any of the characters were and kept getting confused as to who was who. Since this is the seventh book in the series it's probably best to read in order. This book just wasn't my cup of tea.......more

The clear blue skies of Eastport, Maine, mean Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and Ellie White, owners of the Chocolate Moose Bakery, are battling the heat as summer reaches its peak. With boat loads of tourists, a new Chief of Police, and a report of unusual shark activity in the area, they are busier than e......more

Sympathetic characters, effective plot twists, a vividly described small-town Maine setting, and the baking frame add to this satisfying cozy that will appeal to fans of Joanne Fluke and Diane Mott Davidson (for the baking details) and Leslie Meier (for the Maine setting).
