Synopsis

Neal Carey has to keep the mob, the FBI, and a major television personality from killing his newest client, but he's tempted to do the job himself.Sometime student and ever-reluctant detective Neal Carey would rather be finishing a dull doctoral thesis than staring down the nose of a loaded gun, but his new assignment doesn't sound dangerous. All he has to do is pull off the ultimate makeover: turn Polly Paget, a gum-chewing, foul-mouthed, big-haired broad, into a perfect lady in time to testify in a rape case against Jack Landis, head of the Family Cable Network and America's most beloved family man. But Polly isn't cooperating, and everyone (including a former FBI agent, an obsessive-compulsive hitman, the Mafia, a porn prince, and a slew of tabloid reporters) is on her trail, turning Neal's "simple" assignment into a deadly game of duck-duck-goose.In a hellish and hilarious escapade that takes him from the deserts of Nevada to the bright lights of Las Vegas and finally to a hair-raising climax in a shoddily built amusement park, Neal tries to escape the mob's big guns while taking a slippery walk up the world's biggest water slide.

About Don Winslow

American author, Don Winslow, has lived in many places around the world, but his favorite place, and now residence, is California. He was born in New York City, and did go back there as well during his young adult years before he became a full time writer. He actually grew up in a quiet town in Rhode Island, and credits his parents with his ambition to become a writer.......his librarian mother, who encouraged reading, and his Navy dad, who loved to tell stories.

In New York City, Winslow was a manager of Times Square theaters, and also a private investigator. He possessed two higher education degrees, one in African Studies and one in Military History. He even led safaris in Kenya and hiking trips in China. With all those varied jobs, the writing began easily for Author Winslow.

He has written: A Cool Breeze on the Underground, The Death and Life of Bobby Z, which was the book that was so successful it allowed him to be a full time writer. It and his book Savages were both adapted for film. His most recent novel, The Force, was licensed to 20th Century Fox and was due to be released in March, James Mangold, Director.

Winslow still lives in California with his wife, Jean. They have a son, Thomas.

I think of Don Winslow's work as I do of Miles Davis'. There's long been a debate among jazz fans as to who was better--Miles or Dizzy. I vote for Miles. Reason? He took chances outside of his comfort zone. Not all of those chances worked--most did, but not all. But, by going outside the box, he cre......more

Don Winslow's 'A Long Walk Up the Water Slide' reminds me a lot of Robert Crais' work in that there's a wisecracking detective, a fairly convoluted story line, lots of secondary characters, many close calls, and a quick pace. Unlike a typical detective novel, the "star", the perpetual student and so......more

Neal Carey's task? "Turn this bimbo into America's sweetheart." The bimbo being Polly Paget, the woman who is accusing America's most beloved family man, of rape. If that's not hard enough, EVERYONE wants Polly, for all sorts of reasons! A good read, fun dialogue and lots of quirky characters! There'......more

Storia avventurosa e ironica, Winslow riesce a mutare registro, personaggi e storie con grande abilità; unisce elementi disparati che conducono a geniali intrecci che hanno il pregio, come sempre, di tenere incollati i lettori alle sue pagine.......more

Quotes

“Joe Barrett’s narration is excellently hard-boiled and his characters aptly voiced: Neal is superbly exasperated; Polly, steel-cored ditzy; the wise guys, an amalgam of dopiness and menace; the boozy detective is flummoxed; and the upper-crust lawyer is fatuousness itself.” Washington Post

“Elmore Leonard meets Professor Higgins in Winslow’s latest high-spirited Neal Carey caper…Winslow’s dialogue zips along as smartly as the action.” Publishers Weekly

“All parties concerned scramble to come out on top in a final tarantella worthy of Donald Westlake…The broadest, loosest, funniest of the Neal Carey series.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
