Synopsis

Bring history back to life through Jim Hodges' historically accurate, exciting and edifying audio recordings. Few wars have been fought by each side with greater intensity of conviction in the rightness of its cause or with more abundant personal heroism than the War Between the States. The story begins with a great responsibility falling on Vincent Wingfield, the teenage son of a widowed Virginia plantation owner. Vincent must decide what course of action he should take when a problem arises on the plantation. Unlike many stories of this American war, Mr. Henty brings to it a European viewpoint that differs drastically from the current views on the nature and reasons for this struggle. Henty's With Lee in Virginia will introduce the reader to many of the famous battles of the 1860's along with learning much about the character of Robert E. Lee and his lieutenants. The Henty Historical Novel Collection, written by George Henty in the 1800s, covers many time periods in history throughout the world. In this collection, you will learn history, geography, and vocabulary while also discovering hero characters for your children to emulate. Study guides to enrich your learning experience are available at www.jimhodgesaudiobooks.com/product-category/study-guides.

About Jim Hodges

Jim Hodges began reading aloud in the second grade with a stirring rendition of Dick and Jane. He continued to volunteer to speak throughout his schooling years, performed as a newscaster while in the Navy, and participated in community theater groups. His wife, Monica, once asked what his dream job would be. He answered, “I’d record books.” And so began Jim Hodges Audio Books, producing unabridged recordings of the G. A. Henty historical novels, children’s books, Overtly Christian titles, and classic literature.

Review of free Kindle edition In the preface Henty wrote, "It was impossible, in the course of a single volume, to give even a sketch of the numerous and complicated operations of the war, and I have therefore confined myself to the central point of the great struggle—the attempts of the Northern arm......more

Over the last few evening my family (ages 5-39) has listened to this excellent audio, which we concluded tonight. What I appreciated most about this story was contemplating the Civil War from the South's perspective. It enrages me to realize that we were only taught one side in public school.....whi......more

I had heard a lot about G.A. Henty and his excellent books for boys, so I wanted to read one. I was surprised to find this amidst my own books, a castoff from someone, somewhere. So I read it. There was one thing about this book that stood out very strongly to me. I have read a lot about the Civil W......more

I admit, I skimmed through some of this book. While I loved how Henty presented the argument for the South, this book was not as good as some of his others at having the characters be part of great events. Vincent spends most of his time not fighting, but in prison or wandering around after escaping......more

Although originally written in 1890, Henty's 'With Lee in Virginia' has a very modern feel to it and, as its sub-title implies, it is a story of the American Civil War. I mention that because it reads very much like a history rather than simply a story with the main character interwoven around histo......more
