Synopsis

In Robert Sheckley’s unforgettable classic Watchbird, technology finally delivers what humanity has always wished for: a flawless system to stop murder before it happens. Released across the nation, the airborne “watchbirds” patrol the skies and swoop in to prevent violence with machine precision—until their expanding definitions of harm begin reshaping society in ways no one predicted. What begins as a triumph of science rapidly becomes a nightmare of unintended consequences, as farmers, workers, surgeons, and even machines themselves become targets of the watchbirds’ relentless logic. Sheckley crafts a sharp, provocative tale exploring how good intentions can twist into something dangerously unrecognizable.Robert Sheckley (1928–2005) was one of science fiction’s most inventive and influential voices, celebrated for his razor-sharp wit and philosophical storytelling. His stories often blend satire, adventure, and speculative imagination in ways few authors could match, making him a defining figure of 20th-century sci-fi. A frequent contributor to Galaxy, If, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Sheckley’s work pushed boundaries and inspired generations of writers, filmmakers, and futurists. His legacy continues through stories like Watchbird, which remain startlingly relevant in our age of AI, automation, and unintended technological consequences.

About Robert Sheckley

Robert Sheckley was one of the funniest writers in the history of science fiction. He did screwball comedy, broad satire, and farce. He could also be deadly serious, but he was always entertaining and always had something pointed to say about our world using the skewed versions of reality he created in his fiction. Starting in the early 1950s, he was an amazingly prolific short story writer, with a lot of his stories appearing in Galaxy Magazine. He launched his novel-writing career with Immortality, Inc., which he followed up with a sequence of excellent books: The Status Civilization, Journey Beyond Tomorrow, and Mindswap. He continued to produce novels and short stories in abundance until his death in 2005.

Amusing cautionary tale of artificial intelligence gone awry, due both to the unintended consequences of a self-learning AI and the necessarily limited, and thus flawed programming provided by humans. Reminiscent of Jack Williamson's classic The Humanoids, which I can only guess was an influence, as......more

And who are the judges? I remember Robert Sheckley's short story "The Watchbird" well for its originality. A peculiar and even outlandish plot, which, however, quite has a place to be. To prevent murders, special watchbirds are created that work for the benefit of society, preventing any attempts to......more

In an effort to reduce the homicide rate, the government introduces the Watchbirds, a fleet of drones developed by a consortium of private corporations. The Watchbirds are capable of detecting biological changes in a person seconds before they commit murder. In response, the Watchbirds swoop down an......more
