Synopsis

Philip K. Dick’s Upon the Dull Earth is one of his most haunting and unforgettable explorations of love, death, and the fragile line between heaven and earth. Silvia believes she can commune with angelic beings—radiant, hungry presences drawn to blood and spirit alike. Her lover, Rick, watches helplessly as her fascination turns to obsession, and one act of devotion ignites forces beyond human control. What begins as an eerie ritual soon becomes a desperate struggle between worlds, a meditation on faith, resurrection, and the consequences of tampering with the unseen. In the end, Dick turns a love story into a cosmic tragedy that questions the very fabric of existence.Philip K. Dick (1928–1982) remains one of the most visionary minds in science fiction. His stories inspired films like Blade Runner, Minority Report, and Total Recall, and his writing continues to shape the genre with its strange blend of emotion, paranoia, and wonder. Upon the Dull Earth shows why his imagination remains timeless—both tender and terrifying.

First published in Beyond Fantasy Fiction (November, 1954), “Upon the Dull Earth” is a bizarre tale-- bizarre even for Philip K. Dick. It is about a young woman named Sylvia who can see and communicate with otherworldly creatures who are a little like angels, a lot like fairies (the semi-sinister, no......more

Horrific and surreal. A woman can summon... things... to her. Angels? Aliens? Vampires from another dimension? She believes she is destined to join them, against the protests of her fiance and her family. She has some sort of scientific? occult? setup in order to facilitate her transformation. But t......more

This is a totally surreal short story about a girl who wants to become an angel but it backfires. I've come across this story listening to The Truth podcast- a very good audio drama series - I'm enjoying it a lot. The girl's decision and then the subsequent decision of her boyfriend leads to a sort......more

I highly recommend to anyone to read the brilliants stories by Philip K. Dick. They always are entertaining and more importantly, thought provoking. These five stories all deal with things that when written seemed fantastical yet now seem probable, especially "Progeny" which tells the story of how a......more
