Synopsis

Brought to you by Altrusian Grace Media and human-narrated by Matthew Schmitz. Twenty Drawings is a brief but evocative art volume first published in 1919 that gathers twenty of Kahlil Gibran’s drawings, presented with an introductory essay by Alice Raphael. Rather than telling a conventional story, the book offers a visual meditation on beauty, the human form, spirituality, longing, and the dreamlike union of Eastern and Western artistic sensibilities that shaped Gibran’s work. Raphael’s introduction frames the images as expressions of Gibran’s inner philosophy, while the drawings themselves create a contemplative, symbolic experience that will appeal to readers interested in mysticism, poetic art, and the spiritual imagination behind the author of The Prophet. Includes a PDF of all 20 drawings.

About Kahlil Gibran

Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931), a poet, philosopher, and artist, was born in Lebanon, a land that has produced many prophets. The millions of Arabic-speaking peoples familiar with his writings in that language consider him the genius of his age. But he was a man whose fame and influence spread far beyond the Near East. His poetry has been translated into more than twenty languages. His drawings and paintings have been exhibited in the great capitals of the world. In the United States, which he made his home during the last twenty years of his life, he began to write in English. His most famous work is The Prophet, a book of twenty-six poetic essays that explore some of the mysteries of life.
