Her room at the top of the house was once a nursery. It has barred windows, a bed nailed to the floor, and hideous yellow wallpaper that she is not allowed to have changed. With nothing else to occupy her, she begins to study the pattern.

There is a sub-pattern behind the front design. It only shows in certain lights. And after a while she becomes certain that there is a woman behind it, creeping, shaking the bars, trying to get out.
