Synopsis

This comprehensive novel consists of three subplots which interlink to form the whole and supply a trio of targets at which Trollope aims his proselytising pen. The first treats on the courtship of a woman by a man whom she does not love and with whom she is not compatible. Mary Lowther will not accept such a marriage of dishonesty. The second deals with the plight of a young woman who has fallen prey to the wiles of an evil seducer and subsequently adopts a life of prostitution. Trollope’s argument was that the punishment for fornication was much harsher for women than men although in most cases the latter were more to blame and their victims were given no opportunity of returning to decent lives no matter how repentant they may have been. The third subject to receive the benefit of the authors moral outrage is the hypocrisy and narrow vision of the landed gentry in the person of the Marquis of Trowbridge who treats his tenants as serfs and whose social code appears to be ‘might is right.’ The common sense of the pragmatic protagonist, Frank Fenwick, apparently very like Trollope himself, is a joy to hear.

Three Victorian novellas for the price of one! If THE VICAR OF BULLHAMPTOM were a contemporary novel, there would be readers who would criticize Anthony Trollope as having force fit three unrelated short or novella length stories into a single novel for the sake of publication. The first story is a Vi......more

I have discovered from reading so many of his novels that Trollope wrote eight or nine great novels for every merely good one. He is so consistently on message -- and so consistently in control of his material -- that few authors give me so much pleasure when opening a new book of theirs. In additio......more

Without a doubt, the best standalone Trollope I’ve read. There are many threads to this story, and I loved them all. There are so many great characters, lots of interesting issues explored. I hope to write a longer review soon.......more

I do so enjoy reading Trollope. He isn't deep, and perhaps doesn't give the reader much to chew over either during or after. His characterizations are excellent. Mr. Fenwick, the Vicar of the title, is not so much the central character as the man who knows all of the characters of the major plot and......more
