Synopsis

The year is 1904, and Russell is 15. Though he dreams of leaving small-town Indiana to become part of a large farm crew in the Dakotas, he's forced to stay in school, where his sister Tansy has just become the new teacher. Through the autumn, Russell observes the strange goings-on in the classroom, including a fight for Tansy's affection between a rough-and-tumble guy named Glenn and Russell's own best friend, Charlie. (Both will need to compete with a city slicker named Eugene who's in the area trying to sell an amazing new invention called the automobile.) By Thanksgiving, Tansy has become a full-fledged teacher and Russell has resigned himself to the student life. In the last chapter, we learn which man ultimately won Tansy's heart, and also who Russell ended up marrying.

RICHARD PECK was recently hailed as "America's best living author for young adults" by the Washington Post. with 27 previous YA novels to his credit, he has won almost every children's book award. In 2002, he became the first children's author ever to have been awarded a National Humanities Medal.

In 1904 small town Indiana, fifteen-year-old Russell relates the adventures after his teacher’s death, from her funeral, to his sister becoming the local teacher, beaus who try to romance her, and his fight with obtaining an 8th-grade education. Humorous and enjoyable. Peck never lets a person down with humorous incidents, family relations, neighbors, and the lurking future.

This was a read-aloud book for the family and we all enjoyed it. Buckling under pressure I read it in my best Hoosier accent. The book was well written, humorous and understated. Like the characters on its pages the story makes no attempt to be more than it is and, therefore, becomes all the better.......more
