Synopsis

The Sultans Seal is a story of faith and desire, set within a gripping tale of murder in nineteenthcentury Istanbul. When two young Englishwomen are found dead, wearing the symbol of the deposed sultan, Kamil Pasha, a magistrate in the new secular courts, sets out to find the killer. But his dispassionate belief in science and modernity is shaken by betrayal and widening danger. Were these political murders, or crimes of personal passion? Rich in sensuous detail, this novel brilliantly captures the political and social upheavals of the waning Ottoman Empire.

I do like her central character--a Turkish magistrate of strong charact......more

For the first 3/4s of the book this was an elegant mystery, rich in cultural and historical detail. At the end, however, the author chose to pile on the action and everything seemed to be happening at once, not always in a coherent fashion. If it wasn't for that I would have liked to rate this book......more
