Synopsis

The Smoky God, written by Willis George Emerson and published in 1908, is a fantastical tale presented as a true account of the adventures of Olaf Jansen, a Norwegian sailor. The narrative begins with Jansen recounting his extraordinary journey with his father to the North Pole, where they discover an entrance to the Earth's interior.Inside this hidden world, Jansen and his father encounter a civilization of giant beings, approximately twelve feet tall, who live in a series of underground colonies illuminated by a "smoky" sun. This inner realm is depicted as a lush and vibrant place, with its capital city claimed to be the original Garden of Eden.
