Synopsis

The 20th anniversary edition of William Martin’s free-verse interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, written expressly for those coming into the fullness of their wisdom. Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching reminds its listeners that the sage has been venerated in China for thousands of years. Twenty years ago, William Martin, subtly and powerfully, captured the complex emotions connected with growing older in this free-verse interpretation of the Tao. His words resonate just as much now, encouraging today’s sages to recognize their inestimable worth in a youth-centric world that often goes astray. “If there is to be a transformation, it will be the sages among us who will show the way. The elders, the wisewomen, the shamans, the grandmothers, and the grandfathers will provide the guidance, for they have undergone the necessary initiations...and emerged into the spaciousness of simplicity, freedom, and joy. This title is skillfully narrated by Mike Fraser, an Audible listener favorite. Listeners of Sage's Tao Te Ching may also enjoy the audio editions of Couple's Tao Te Ching and Parent's Tao Te Ching, also narrated by Mike Fraser. This audiobook includes a selection of brief teachings from the author. Produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont. ©2000, 2010, 2020 William Martin.

About William Martin

William Martin has written seven novels, an award-winning PBS documentary, and a horror movie now considered a cult classic. He is best known, however, for his historical fiction, which has chronicled the history of Boston, New England, and the nation. His first novel, Back Bay, spent fourteen weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List. His subsequent novels, including Harvard Yard, Citizen Washington, Annapolis, and Cape Cod, have established him, in the words of Publishers Weekly, as a “storyteller whose smoothness matches his ambition.” There are now more than three million copies of his books in print. Martin was the recipient of the 2005 New England Book Award, given by the New England Booksellers Association to an author whose “body of work stands as a significant contribution to the culture of the region.”

Broadly following the passages in Laozi’s original, Martin applies the old master’s teaching to the experience of aging in later life, wisely inspiring the reader to accept the emerging opportunities that come with growing older. Let go of attachment to the past to gain the wisdom of a sage by accep......more

Concise wisdom for our later years based on the Tao Te Ching. William Martin uses the loose rhythms of free verse to interpret and expound on teachings about spiritual and practical living from this age old tradition. Surprisingly deep and to the point in a way that I wasn’t expecting from such a li......more

Read this at the encouragement of my brother. A short book, it would seem to be a fast read, but a better approach is to read selected topics and contemplate the ideas and perspective offered, and then apply them to your current situation.......more
