Synopsis

"The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux is a fictional novel likely written in the late 19th century. The story centers on the mysterious figure known as the Opera Ghost, who haunts the Paris Opera House and exerts influence over the opera singers, particularly the talented Christine Daaé.
At the heart of the plot are Christine, a gifted singer protected by the ghost's presence, and Raoul, the Viscount de Chagny, who loves her passionately and becomes entwined in the ghost's enigmatic world. The beginning of "The Phantom of the Opera" introduces a tantalizing mystery through its prologue, which asserts that the ghost's existence is real, and the opening chapters that explore the vibrant atmosphere of the opera house.
As the managers prepare for their retirement celebration, the ghost's ominous presence is felt, with frightened ballet dancers discussing strange occurrences and a tragic death linked to the ghost, that of Joseph Buquet. These elements foreshadow the turmoil surrounding Christine Daaé, who begins to withdraw from public life due to an inexplicable fear following a spectacular performance. Meanwhile, Raoul's affection for her adds to the narrative's tension. The stage is thus set for a Gothic tale of love, obsession, and the supernatural.

About Gaston Leroux

Gaston Leroux was a French mystery novelist, playwright, and journalist, who was perhaps best known for writing The Phantom of the Opera. Leroux's narratives were fast moving, and he often used complicated plots. In his youth, he wrote stories inspired by Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo. His later works showed the influence of Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe.

Leroux was born on May 6, 1868, in Paris to a wealthy store owner. He attended school in Normandy and obtained his law degree in Paris in 1889. When his father died, Leroux inherited nearly a million francs, and he spent most of his time drinking and gambling. Eventually, finding his money gone, Leroux started to work as a theater critic and reporter for L'Écho de Paris. By 1890, Leroux had become a full-time journalist.

Between 1894 and 1906, Leroux traveled to different countries throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia as a correspondent. He wrote for the daily newspaper Le Matlin in addition to L'Écho de Paris and covered the Russian Revolution of 1905. In 1909, Leroux devoted himself entirely to writing, focusing on plays and popular novels of mystery and detection. Leroux established his own film company called Cineromans in 1919. He died in Nice on April 16, 1927.

Persons who are visited by the Angel quiver with a thrill unknown to the rest of mankind. And they cannot touch an instrument or open their mouths to sing, without producing sounds that put all other human sounds to shame. Erik, AKA The Phantom of the Opera, is Paris's Heathcliff. The Phantom’s greatest tragedy in life is the fact that he came so close to gaining the heart of the girl he loved, a sense of acceptance he has wanted for an entire lifetime, but because of his scarred and damaged soul he did nothing but terrify her; ultimately, shattering the initial allure and gl......more

Excellent, marvelous. A phantasmagorical (ha ha!) PERFECTION. NO JOKE. This is one true House of Horrors, perhaps the best one ever orchestrated (maybe discounting Poe). Yes, EVER. The prose is so simple, so readable, that the barest of essentials are there, in all their power & glory: the haunted h......more

A z kolei sama historia Erika gubi się kompl......more
