Synopsis

Alafair Tucker is a strong woman and the core of her familys life on a farm in Oklahoma where backbreaking work and the daily logistics of caring for her husband and their nine children, and of being a good neighbor, requires determination and a clear head. Shes also a woman of strong opinions, and it is her opinion that her neighbor, Harley Day, is a drunkard and a reprobate. So, when Harleys body is discovered frozen in a snowdrift one January day in 1912, she isnt surprised that his long-suffering family isnt particularly broken up. When Alafair helps Harleys wife prepare the body for burial, she discovers that Harleys demise was anything but natural: there is a bullet lodged behind his ear. And when she hears that Harleys son, John Lee, is the prime suspect in his fathers murder, she grows concernedher seventeen-year-old daughter Phoebe is in love with the boy. At first, Alafairs only fear is that Phoebe is in for a broken heart, but as she begins to unravel the events that led to Harleys death, she discovers that Phoebe might be more than just John Lees sweetheart: she may be his accomplice in murder. But a man like Harley turns many people against him, and whoever said there are some things even a mother cant fix never met Alafair Tucker. Pitch-perfect for the Oklahoma frontier, Donis Caseys first novel in the Alafair Tucker mystery series is both a compelling mystery and a remarkable evocation of the hard work and family joys of life one hundred years ago.

I tried this book simply because I loved the title. This is the first book in the Alafair Tucker mystery series. And what a protagonist Alafair is. She's a 35 year old mother of nine children! The setting is 1912 Boynton, Oklahoma. Alafair and her husband Shaw are farmers in the thriving town of Boy......more

Not quite a 4 star listen as it dragged on a bit, but close enough. I had some issues with timing a couple of times, but that was fairly minor compared to the setting. The time is 1912, the heroine a mother of most of a dozen, Alafair, & the mystery is figuring out who killed a man that everyone tho......more

The death of a cruel and drunken ne'er-do-well opens Donis Casey's The Old Buzzard Had It Coming. No one's sorry when Harley Day is found dead in a snow drift -- not his neighbors, not the sheriff, not the town folk of Boynton, Oklahoma, and especially not the wife he beat and the 19-year-old son he......more

I loved this story and enjoyed the homespun details of 1912 Oklahoma smalltown life. Alafair Tucker is a little too good to be true, but the mystery was a good one. I read one of the latter books in the series a few years ago and was glad to start over with this one. I don't read a lot of cozy myste......more

The title caught my eye, but I didn't have great expectations for it. I think I picked it up because there was an endorsement by Tony Hillerman on the dustjacket. I finished the book in two evenings, and thoroughly enjoyed it! It evokes a not-so-distant time and place in the early 1900's that my adm......more
