Synopsis

One of the most prominent historical Puritan writers, John Owen, dives into the theology of salvation and the timeless question of how sin and temptation affect the lives of Christians.  In The Mortification of Sin, Owen states not only that sin remains an active and negative force on the lives of Christians, but also that there is a highly effective way to combat that evil force and temptation along with it.  Largely addressing Romans 8, this work extracts understanding and brings clarity to the reader on these widely discussed topics.  Despite such a potentially disheartening revelation of the impact and influence of sin, Owen reminds the reader of the triumph of Christ.  He explains how this battle for life and death can be won with the power of the Holy Spirit through the gospel of Jesus Christ.  With this work, Owen describes how followers of Christ can join the fight with Jesus to weaken and eventually eliminate sin.

This was probably my 9th or 10th time through this book in one of its forms; and each time I gain something new. Chapter 14 (the last chapter) is the key to the whole and readers who do not read all the way to end will misunderstand Owen. The nine directions preceding chapter 14 are all preparatory......more

Renn translation/modernization: though I had read this before Renn’s version was made it even better. Many modernizations fall flat because they don’t really care about keeping the prose similar to the original but instead putting modern words in instead of out of use terms. Renn does not do this, h......more

2025: At least my tenth read. Every time unlocks new depths. Three observations this time: 1) Chapter 5 is key. Lots of this book is applicable across the board, but it is deliberately pointed at sin habits that are besetting and exceptionally successful and disturbing. This is important to avoid mis......more

Oh the strides in recognition of my own wretchedness and Gods overwhelming glory this book has brought me. Peace of spirit, excitement in......more
