Synopsis

In the hushed glen of Sleepy Hollow, where mist curls through ancient trees and every whisper might be a ghost, superstition is as thick as the autumn fog. Schoolmaster Ichabod Crane—awkward, ambitious, and endlessly curious—arrives in this secluded Dutch settlement dreaming of love, fortune, and respect. But when he sets his sights on the captivating heiress Katrina Van Tassel, he also stirs the jealousy of her bold suitor, Brom Bones. As harvest season wanes and shadows lengthen, tales of the Headless Horseman, the phantom rider said to haunt the Hollow, take on a terrible life of their own. One fateful night, beneath a pale moon and a canopy of rustling leaves, Ichabod’s world of reason collides with legend—and the line between man and myth vanishes.Washington Irving’s classic 1820 tale remains one of America’s most enduring ghost stories: part romance, part satire, and wholly haunting. This definitive edition invites a new generation of readers and listeners to rediscover the humor, atmosphere, and shiver of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow—a story where fear rides fastest in the imagination.(Perfect for fans of gothic folklore, timeless ghost stories, and darkly romantic Americana.)

About Washington Irving

Washington Irving (1783–1859) was an American author, short story writer, essayist, poet, travel book writer, biographer, and columnist. He is best known for writing the stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Early on, he was a contributor to the Morning Chronicle, published Salmagundi, and served as editor of Analetic magazine in Philadelphia and New York. In 1809, he published the comical A History of New York under the name "Dietrich Knickerbocker." Eleven years later, he published a collection of stories entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., which allowed him to become a full-time writer. Other books written by Irving are Bracebridge Hall, Chronicles of the Conquest of Granada, A Tour of the Prairies, and The Life of George Washington, a five-volume title.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow might be one of the most perfect spooky tales to read, listen to, or tell on a cool October night. I listened to the whole thing on one, chilly, misty, fall walk. As the leaves fell from the trees and the dew from the fog condensed on my coat, I was transported to Sleepy......more

I thought this story and I were Meant To Be. A few days before reading this, I read and reviewed Washington Irving's other famous story, Rip Van Winkle, and really enjoyed it. And then I read The Fold, which has this exchange between a high school student and his teacher in the first few pages:“Ich......more

I remember the movies and I think I recall we read and analyzed this short story in school. I think it was around Halloween as a fun activity but I really could not remember the story at all. It was a favourite of my husband's but I could not find his old childhood copy anywhere around the house. Lu......more
