Synopsis

Meet the Tobin family ...

Joy - the mother
Unconscious in a hospital bed, Joy's latest act has thrown the family into turmoil

Frances - the middle child
Seemingly perfect wife and mother, Frances is having inappropriate dreams about an ex, and might be about to derail her whole life

Conor - the protector
Successful and famous, high-flyer Conor is walking a fine line between self-promotion and self-detonation

Sinead - the baby of the family
Bohemian rebel, trying to write the story she needs to tell, but despising herself for failing to do it

As Joy hovers between life and death, the siblings must come together to face their past. It's the only chance they have of unlocking the future.

A stunning novel about complex family dynamics, the intricacies of motherhood, marriage, and infidelity, and the lingering power of past trauma, which echoes down generations.

I am always willing to enjoy a locally set book just for the thrill of recognising the places described, and this is also a great read. The Tobin family has made the best they can of their disfunctional upbringing, being uprooted from Ireland to NZ as their mother Joy seeks to escape from the past.......more

Quotes

The Last Days of Joy examines family, mental health and motherhood and is already being described as a worthy successor of Meg Mason's Sorrow and Bliss Irish Independent

Smart and highly perceptive, this is a writer who is not afraid to tell it as it is. The Last Days of Joy is a brave and profoundly honest book, written with dark humour

You will fall in love with every one of the Tobin family

Authentic, deeply moving and full of hope, this book broke my heart a little

The Last Days of Joy is a page turner, portraying the madness and messiness of family life. This novel is full of humanity, its cast of characters all at the centre of tragedy, but coupled with Tiernan's deliciously dark humour and sharp observations on modern life--it works brilliantly. I loved it!

With intelligence and depth, Anne Tiernan wraps the reader into the warp and weft of the Tobins' secrets, troubles, and joys. An absorbing novel, beautifully written
