Justice witch Cassia Winter and her familiar Stanley investigate the mysterious deaths of magical stone creatures while Brimstone is spellbound by a charismatic storyteller and his black butterflies.

A strange celebration overtakes Brimstone when the dazzling storyteller Quinn Ocean returns ahead of schedule, bringing black butterflies and a wave of enchantment with him. But while the town falls under his spell, justice witch Cassia Winter and her familiar Stanley discover a grotesque reduced to a lifeless pile of sand. Soon another stone creature is found dead, and the clues point far beyond an ordinary fall from a roof. Cassia must question gargoyles, grotesques, magical townsfolk, and the secrets behind Quinn’s performance before Brimstone loses more than its good sense.
