Synopsis

What happens when the deepest comforts of belief meet the cold pressure of reason? In The Future of an Illusion, Sigmund Freud delivers a provocative work of philosophy and psychology that examines religion as a powerful human creation shaped by wish, fear, and the demands of civilization. With the clarity of an essay and the urgency of a manifesto, Freud explores how shared beliefs can soothe anxiety, enforce social order, and offer meaning, while also raising hard questions about truth, maturity, and the costs of comforting ideas. This is classic Freudian thought at full intensity: bold, skeptical, and relentlessly focused on the hidden motives behind what people say they believe.Listeners can expect an accessible introduction to psychoanalytic ideas applied to culture, morality, and belief, along with a challenging meditation on faith and reason. The Future of an Illusion suits anyone drawn to psychology classics, philosophy of religion, secular thought, cultural criticism, and the history of ideas. Whether you approach it as a study of the mind, a critique of religion, or a landmark in modern intellectual history, this audiobook invites careful reflection and spirited debate.Press play and experience Freud at his most direct and uncompromising.

About Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) was an Austrian psychiatrist and the founder of psychoanalysis. Considered the most influential psychological theorist of the twentieth century, Freud's theories have had an enormous influence on art, literature, and social thinking. Freud's fundamental idea was that all humans are endowed with an unconscious in which potent sexual and aggressive drives, and defenses against them, struggle for supremacy. His first major work was The Interpretation of Dreams, which established the importance of the psychoanalytical movement. His other writings include Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego, The Future of an Illusion, The Ego and the Id, and Beyond the Pleasure Principle.
