Synopsis

Bring history back to life through Jim Hodges' historically accurate, exciting, and edifying audio recordings. The Saxons and Vikings fought many fierce battles in Britain in the eighth and ninth centuries. During the struggle, twenty-three-year-old Alfred ascended the throne and temporarily beat back the pagan hordes and concluded a peace treaty. Following another war in 878, peace was again achieved; the Danish King Guthrum accepted Christianity and withdrew to East Anglia, and Alfred the Great fortified cities, built a navy, codified laws, and revived learning among the Saxons until his death in AD 900. The hero is a Saxon thane named Edmund who joins the forces of King Alfred, fighting the Danes on land and in their own element, the sea, in his ship The Dragon. Carried by storms to the shores of Norway, he defeats Sweyn the Viking in single combat, takes part in the siege of Paris on behalf of the Franks, and tracks down his nemesis in order to rescue the Danish maiden he will later marry. The Henty Historical Novel Collection, written by George Henty in the 1800s, covers many time periods in history throughout the world. About Jim Hodges

Jim Hodges began reading aloud in the second grade with a stirring rendition of Dick and Jane. He continued to volunteer to speak throughout his schooling years, performed as a newscaster while in the Navy, and participated in community theater groups. His wife, Monica, once asked what his dream job would be. He answered, “I’d record books.” And so began Jim Hodges Audio Books, producing unabridged recordings of the G. A. Henty historical novels, children’s books, Overtly Christian titles, and classic literature.

The main character, fictional Edmund, is placed in the historical events of King Alfred’s early reign when the Danish Vikings were plundering and overrunning divided England. Edmund, through discipline of himself and his m......more

Historical fiction from a biblical world view. Does it get any better?!? The Dragon and the Raven Dramatic audio (lamplighter publishing style) by G.A. Henty. We recently listened to this epic story of King Alfred of Wessex standing against the Danes as they invade England in the late 800s. I cannot......more

An easier GA Henty, because it's shorter. I had so much fun reading it. I do feel I should mention that Henty is a historical fiction writer who focuses on the historical, not so much on the fiction. Unless it's to get details across in a funner way. Would you rather read about a battle the main cha......more
