Synopsis

In this seminal text, Kant argues that human knowledge is limited to the phenomenal world, which is experienced through the senses and understood through the categories of space, time, and causality. He introduces the concept of the "transcendental aesthetic," which outlines the necessary conditions for the possibility of experience, and the "transcendental analytic," which analyzes the conditions under which objects can be known. Kant's critique of pure reason aims to demonstrate that there are limits to human knowledge, while also asserting the necessity and validity of reason in the acquisition of knowledge. This groundbreaking work laid the foundation for modern philosophy and has had a profound impact on subsequent philosophical thought.

About Immanuel Kant

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a Prussian philosopher whose best-known works include the Critique of Pure Reason, the Critique of Practical Reason, the Critique of Judgment, and the Metaphysics of Morals. The fourth of eleven children, he attended the University of Königsberg beginning in 1740, where he later became a professor of philosophy. A central figure in moral philosphy, Kant's doctrines rely upon the principles of human autonomy and rationality. His work influenced-either as a foundation or a point of opposition-such later philosophers as Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Foucault, and his ideas have affected fields ranging from metaphysics and ethics to epistemology and political philosophy.
