Synopsis

The “consistently high-quality” (Booklist) Charlie Parker series continues with a white-knuckled new thriller from New York Times bestselling author John Connolly.

Wyatt Riggins, the boyfriend of rising Maine artist Zetta Nadeau, has gone missing, leaving behind a cell phone containing a single-word message: RUN. Private investigator Charlie Parker is hired to find out why Riggins has fled, and from whom.

Parker discovers that Riggins, an ex-soldier, has been involved in the abduction of four children from Mexico: three girls and a boy, all belonging to the cartel boss Blas Urrea—except Urrea’s family is safe and well in Mexico, which means the abductees cannot be his children. Yet whoever they are, Urrea wants them back, and has dispatched his agents to secure them, even if it means butchering everyone who stands in their way.

One of those agents is Eugene Seeley, a clever, ruthless solver of other men’s problems. The other is an unknown woman.

Every child has a mother. Now Charlie Parker will face one unlike any other, and learn the terrifying truth about the Children of Eve.

About John Connolly

Dublin, Ireland born author, John Connolly, like many other authors, has held many jobs before solely dedicating his professional career to writing. He worked as a journalist, a barman, a local government official, a waiter, and a department store (Harrod's) gofer. His studies included English and Journalism, and spent five years as a freelance journalist for The Irish Times newspaper. He wrote his first novel, "Every Dead Thing", which was published in 1999. This began the introduction of his now famous main character, Charlie Parker. Charlie is considered to be a sort of anti-hero type, a former police officer who was forever hunting the killer of his wife and daughter. A total of fourteen books were written (through 2016) with Charlie Parker as the main character. The last three books made a change from being told in the first person of Parker, to being told by a third party person's point of view.

Connolly also published other thriller novels outside the Parker series. One such novel was about a young boy's coming-of-age journey through a fantasy of life during World War II England. Film adaptations of some of his works have been procured and will be made for film in the future. The first to appear to audiences was somewhat based on one of his short stories, "The New Daughter", and starred Kevin Costner and Ivana Bauquero.

In 2009, Connolly wrote his first novel geared specifically to younger readers, "The Gates", followed in 2011 by sequels, "Hell's Bells" (UK), and "The Infernals" (US), and "The Creeps" in 2013.

John Connolly's home base is still in Dublin, but he does divide his working time between there and the United States, which is where the Charlie Parker series takes place.

Charlie Parker is back and as usual, he is pulled into quite the mess in this book. Slow to start but strong to finish, The Children of Eve involves missing children, a missing man, and devious and dangerous people. The books in the Charlie Parker series always have great mysteries, plenty of action......more

There is a sense of menace in The Children of Eve. Early on it’s quite ambiguous but lingers even amidst what appear to be routine activities for Charlie Parker, his friends, associates, loved ones and various clients. Charlie is self-admittedly middle aged now, dealing with the daily physical side......more

This series has been a favorite of mine for many years, so I was very excited to finally listen to the audiobook of The Children of Eve. While the narrator did a fantastic job, I found myself struggling to keep track of all the characters, and the middle dragged a bit for me. That said, I was really......more

Perhaps what struck me the most about this, the 22nd in the author's Charlie Parker series, is that Charlie clearly isn't a spring chicken anymore. His old injuries still give him fits, and the new ones fit him too close to for comfort. I'll also say of all the Parker books I've read so far (seven si......more
